last chance for gertrude open studios 2011!
December 09, 2011
Location: Gertrude Contemporary 200 Gertrude Street Fitzroy, 3065
Gertrude Contemporary Gallery
Every year the Gertrude Contemporary art space opens its doors to showcase a selection of new work by current artists in residence. The show this year features works by fifteen of Australia's most innovative young artists and seeks to investigate the commonalities between what appear to be divergent practices. Kate Smith presents a collaboration with fellow artists in residence, Trevelyan Clay, Alex Vivian and the painter Geoff Newton. The works represent the tennis match involved in the collaboration process, which saw a suite of paintings passed back and forth between the artist illustrating “the act of finishing another’s (painted) sentences”.
The exhibition sways between the dynamic practices of Darren Sylvester's constructed NASA space suit – incorporated from a patchwork of 27 different layers and materials – and Alex Vivian’s new sculptural works, comprised of material compressed into glass vessels. “Also working with and around notions of compression is Joshua Petherick, who presents a new series of prints which toy with the process of duplicating images into abstraction.”
Other artists also featured are Susan Jacobs, Katie Lee, Emily Ferretti, Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano, Laith McGregor, Sanné Mestrom, Selina Ou, Hanna Tai, Jensen Tjhung, Jake Walker and Paul Yore
This is the last chance to get in to see this exhibition, which finishes this Saturday 17 December.
